We are all part of a vast media bubble, which can be hard to escape. This is true even if you don’t, for example, watch TV or use social media, as negative news, particularly, has a way of reaching us from time to time. When this happens, consider these three simple steps to handle it:
1. Go in One Ear and Out the Other
Try to ignore it, or better yet, transform it into something positive if possible. In the words of Dan Brown, “Everything is possible. The impossible just takes longer.”
2. Don’t Take It Too Seriously
Often, negative news can stress us out, leading us to believe it’s a catastrophic event. The good news? It’s just another piece of negative information that shouldn’t be overemphasized. Take a moment to breathe in and out before being too hard on yourself. Remember, life goes on.
3. Meditate
Yes, meditate! It’s a simple yet powerful tool to help you relax and focus on the beauty of the present moment.
The Plum Village App (A free app with guided meditations, deep relaxations, and other practices offered by Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh and his monastic community.)
Meditation is to be aware of every thought and of every feeling, never to say it is right or wrong, but just to watch it and move with it. In that watching, you begin to understand the whole movement of thought and feeling. And out of this awareness comes silence. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
While we might not always escape the media bubble, as you’ve learned, you can still cultivate positivity within it. It’s okay to be a part of the bubble, as long as you make it comfortable for yourself and others. For now, start with these three simple steps. 😉
